BBC complaint tool for campaigns

Each supporter files their own complaint with the BBC's complaints service about one article or one programme. The complaint is submitted through the BBC's own complaints interface, in the supporter's name, and the BBC replies to them directly.

BBC complaint5 credits per delivery

What it files

A personalised complaint about one published article, one television programme or one radio programme.

To whom

BBC Complaints, which handles editorial complaints about BBC output.

What the campaign supplies

  • Which medium the complaint is about, because the BBC files an online article, a television programme and a radio programme as three different things.
  • The article link, or the programme title and broadcast date.
  • A subject line and the complaint template.

What the supporter supplies

  • Their first and last name, collected as two separate fields because the BBC's complaints interface requires both.
  • Their email address.
  • Their postal address and where they live, including an outside the UK option for supporters abroad.

Consent

The supporter agrees that the complaint and the address fields the BBC requires are sent to the BBC and processed under the BBC's privacy notice.

Credits per delivery

5 credits. One delivery is one supporter's copy, so a campaign that writes to three recipients on a supporter's behalf draws three deliveries.

How it is delivered

The BBC emails the supporter a verification link and the complaint is only officially filed once they click it. The BBC undertakes to reply to most complaints within ten working days. Every supporter's copy is personalised from the campaign's template: the subject is rewritten for each send, and the body's arrangement varies per participant, so a thousand filings are not one document a thousand times.
